The Marker is in formal recognition of the numerous private donors and public partners that worked together to protect the 137-acre Ellwood Mesa property now the Sperling Preserve. The historic effort raised $20.4 million between 2003 and 2005 to ensure this spectacular bluff will be preserved for future generations. "The Trust for Public Land is very proud to have played a role in making this property accessible to hikers picnickers painters and students in addition to the winged visitors it receives every winter," said Debra Geiler. "Given how hard we worked to acquire Ellwood Mesa it seems fitting that we have come together again on the land to celebrate all those who helped protect it," she added. "Without the support of these special people and groups in our community. Ellwood Mesa would not be able to be protected and appreciated by our children and grandchildren into perpetuity. "We know this perfect work of art will warm the heart of every schoolchild neighbor official and activist with whom and for whom we saved Ellwood Mesa. We urge everyone to come and see all our wild creatures fly swim and pace around the bronze relief map greeting every passing visitor from ocean views through native grasslands to the cinnamon-winged monarch butterflies that have made the eucalyptus groves of the Sperling Preserve so famous." The Donor Recognition Marker consists of four panels. The right panel recognizes the many private donors that contributed to the Campaign to Save Ellwood Mesa. The left panel acknowledges the leadership of numerous public officials including U. S. Senators Dianne Feinstein and Boxer. Congresswoman Lois Capps and former Assemblymember Hannah-Beth Jackson and County Supervisor Gail Marshall. The left panel lists the names of the Goleta City Founding Council Members and displays logos of the key public funders the California Wildlife Conservation Board the State Coastal Conservancy the County of Santa Barbara and the federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Robert Comstock is also recognized for his integral role in this effort. The front panel of the Marker commemorates the dedication of the Sperling Preserve which took place on March 4. 2005. It reads: "With profound appreciation to those who tenaciously fought to preserve the magnificent beauty and natural environment of Ellwood Mesa for future generations; and for those who generously donated the funds to realize the dream of its permanent protection." The top of the Marker is a topographical depiction of the Sperling Preserve noting the following special places: The California Grove. The Pierre Claeyssens Monarch Meadow the Wendy McCaw Coastal Trail and the Harriett Phillips Beach Trail. Ellwood Mesa was protected through the efforts of TPL and its local partner. Friends of the Ellwood Coast (FOTEC). The fundraising campaign began in January of 2003 and when the City of Goleta agreed to convey a 36-acre parcel of Santa Barbara Shores Park to Comstock Homes to help secure the acquisition. In early January of 2005. TPL announced that it had reached its $20.4 million goal thanks to an anonymous donation of $307,000. Less than two weeks later the California Coastal Commission approved the land swap portion of the acquisition and the Comstock Homes development plan and escrow closed within days. The Sperling Preserve was officially dedicated at a ceremony held in Goleta on March 4. 2005. Ellwood Mesa is located at the eastern gateway to the Gaviota Coast one of the most significant biological transition zones in the world. This property contains numerous environmentally sensitive coastal resources onsite including monarch butterfly and raptor habitats vernal pools and native grasslands. In addition it is a cherished community asset where visitors and residents can walk jog bike ride horses watch birds and access the beach.
